‘Skater dress’ is one of those terms that the fashion world picked up and ran with. It originated through likening dresses with fitted bodices and full skirts (perfect for twirling in!) to those worn by figure skaters (and we’re not really talking the more often seen modern day creations but something like this, this or this worn in the 1940s or 1950s).
For the last few years it’s been a fairly popular alternative to saying ‘fit and flare’ or similar descriptions although like many of these terms it’s often loosely interepreted - not surprising then that it can be hard to pinpoint the style it’s refering to!
